The vast majority of children’s books about the Internet paint a bleak picture of addiction, cyberbullying, privacy abuse, catfishing, piracy, and so on. In an effort to tell a different and more positive story, as part of my dissertation at USC Annenberg, I crowdsourced the writing and illustration of a children’s book about digital culture via Mechanical Turk: a children’s book about the Internet, by the Internet!
You can read the resulting book, The Adventures of Hashtag the Snail, below (click on it for full screen). In true crowdsourcing fashion, each part of the story and each illustration was contributed by a different online participant; this book is a testament to the amazing creativity of the crowd. A big thank you to all those who participated! (See p. 30 for a list of contributors.)
